Im Mittelpunkt der internationalen Tagung stehen die Trente Glorieuses, die drei „goldenen“ Dekaden der europäischen Nachkriegszeit. Die Tagung untersucht, wie staatliche Institutionen und soziale Eliten die im Begriff angelegte Vorstellung einer glücklichen Symbiose von sozialer Marktwirtschaft und demokratischer Staatlichkeit mobilisierten, um ihre Gesellschaften zu transformieren. Während die Trente Glorieuses ein Modell darstellten, um die wirtschaftliche und politische Stabilität der westeuropäischen Nachkriegszeit als Inbegriff von europäischer Modernität zu charakterisieren, spielte das Konzept auch in autoritären Staaten jenseits von Westeuropa eine wichtige Rolle. Es ist dabei eine offene Frage, in welcher Weise der Anspruch auf politische und wirtschaftliche Modernität hier genuiner Bestandteil staatlicher Reformversuche war. Folgte aus ihnen in Spanien oder Portugal eine gesellschaftliche Eigendynamik oder schien Modernisierung im Sinne der Trente Glorieuses auch als Moderne ohne Demokratie möglich? Damit stellt sich zugleich die Frage, welche Handlungs- und Legitimationsressourcen das ursprünglich demokratisch gefasste Modell für autoritäre Regime bereithielt. Die Tagung setzt die unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen der Trente Glorieuses in Europa zueinander in Beziehung und will damit auch die Rolle hinterfragen, die das Konzept in gegenwärtigen historiographischen und politischen Diskursen sowie aktuellen Konzeptionen politischer Ökonomie spielt.
